If you hold a residence permit (RP) in Turkey, opening a bank account is generally easier, though there are still several requirements to meet.

What is required?

  • Residence permit (İkamet) and passport – these are the primary documents that confirm your legal status in Turkey.
  • Tax Identification Number (Vergi Numarası) – this can be obtained at the tax office or online.
  • Address registration (Adres Beyanı) – either a document from the MERNİS system or a utility bill in your name.

Which banks open accounts for foreigners?

Most major Turkish banks, such as Ziraat Bankası, İş Bankası, Garanti BBVA, Yapı Kredi, and Akbank, offer accounts to foreigners. However, terms may vary, so it’s best to inquire directly with the specific branch.

Tips:

  • Opt for branches in tourist areas or larger cities, where you’re more likely to get a positive response.
  • Be prepared to make a minimum deposit, as some banks require an initial deposit to open the account.
