New Rules for Obtaining and Renewing Residence Permits in Turkey from 2025

As of January 1, 2025, new rules regarding the issuance and renewal of residence permits have come into effect in Turkey. These updates affect both primary applications and the renewal of existing permits. Below are the key changes.

  1. Restrictions on renewing tourist residence permits based on rental contracts It is now impossible to renew a tourist residence permit based solely on a rental contract. Exceptions are made for citizens of Russia, the European Union, China, and OECD member states — they can still use a rental contract as a basis for renewing their residence permit.

  2. Increased financial requirements To renew a tourist residence permit, it is necessary to prove a monthly income or funds of at least 1.5 times the minimum wage in Turkey per person. According to current calculations, this amount is approximately 825 USD per month.

  3. Simplified rules for leaving the country Holders of short-term and family residence permits can now stay outside of Turkey for more than 120 or 180 days without their residence permit being canceled. This important change benefits those who frequently travel or temporarily reside in other countries.

  4. Renewal of family residence permits for children up to 25 years old If parents hold a valid residence permit in Turkey, their children can now extend their family residence permit until they reach the age of 25. Previously, this right was valid only until the age of 18.

These changes are aimed at strengthening migration control and preventing abuse of tourist status. Authorities emphasize the need for legal and legitimate residence in the country.
