How Pharmacies Work in Turkey: Tips for Foreigners

If you find yourself in Turkey and need medication, don’t worry — there is a clear and convenient system in place. The key is knowing a few tips that will help you quickly and calmly obtain the medication you need.

  • Let’s start with the basics
Call the nearest pharmacy and ask if the medication you need is in stock. *Many pharmacies are happy to provide this information over the phone, saving you time and effort.
  • Not available in the pharmacy? They can order it!
If the medication is not available, they can order it from the warehouse. Typically, delivery takes anywhere from a few hours to a day. You’ll just need to return later to pick up your order.
  • "Nowhere to be found" isn’t always true
Sometimes they may say that the medication isn’t even available from the warehouse and offer you an alternative. This could be true, but not always. Pharmacies work with different suppliers, and what isn’t available at one may be found at another. It’s a good idea to check multiple places.
  • Alternatives and substitutes
If your medication isn’t officially available in Turkey, you will most likely find a substitute with the same active ingredient. Don’t hesitate to study the composition — this will help you identify an alternative.
  • Prescription medication
Some medications in Turkey can only be dispensed with a prescription. Pharmacies are not allowed to sell such medications without it, as this is strictly regulated by law.
  • How to get a prescription
Make an appointment with a doctor (either private or public) and explain your situation — the doctor will prescribe the necessary medication. With this prescription, you can purchase the medication from any pharmacy.
  • Language barrier is not a problem
