In Turkey, the emergency ambulance number is 112. It operates nationwide, including in tourist areas. In most emergency situations, the service is free, even for foreigners — but there are some important details to keep in mind.
When Ambulance Services Are Free:
Ambulance services are free of charge in life-threatening emergencies such as:
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Traffic accidents
- Serious injuries
- Loss of consciousness
- Seizures
- Respiratory arrest
- Childbirth, and similar situations
These services are available free for everyone — Turkish citizens, tourists, and foreigners without a residence permit or health insurance.
Patients are transported to the nearest suitable hospital, whether public or private, depending on availability and the severity of the condition.
When Ambulance Services Might Be Paid:
You may be charged if the situation is not life-threatening, such as:
- High fever without complications
- Exacerbation of chronic illnesses
- Mild headache or general discomfort
- Transport requested by the patient (e.g., from home to hospital)
- Transfers between hospitals without medical necessity
If a private ambulance is called (through a clinic or directly), costs typically start from 1000 TRY and vary based on distance and service level.
⚠️ False calls or refusal of service without a valid reason after the ambulance arrives may result in a fine.
What to Do:
If you're unsure but the situation seems serious, call 112. It's safe and free if there's any suspicion of a life-threatening condition.
