Actual Case: A Market Souvenir That Triggered a Travel Ban from Turkey

Russian tourist Alexander T. was stopped at a Turkish airport because customs found a powder flask in his luggage, suspected to be historically valuable. After two months of legal proceedings and expert examination, he was fully cleared and allowed to leave. The case highlights Turkey’s strict rules on exporting potentially valuable items, even common souvenirs. Travelers are advised to keep receipts, request certificates, and be cautious when buying items abroad.

In early March, Russian citizen Alexander T. arrived in Turkey with his family for a vacation. Everything was going according to plan: hotels, beaches, sightseeing, and markets. However, when he tried to fly home on March 6, he was stopped at the airport.

Why?
In his luggage, customs found a powder flask purchased at a flea market for 1000 lira. Turkish authorities suspected that the item might have historical value and imposed a travel ban until the legal proceedings were completed.

What happened next?

  • The Foreigners Support Center provided Alexander with a Russian-speaking lawyer.
  • The center’s staff, together with Alexander, located the seller who confirmed the purchase and issued a receipt stating that the item was not an antique.
  • All documents were submitted to the prosecutor’s office.
  • The court scheduled a hearing for May 7 — after two months of waiting.

Court decision (07.05.2025):
• Alexander T. was fully acquitted
• The travel ban was lifted
• An expert examination confirmed that the item has no historical or cultural value

During this time, Alexander T.:
— Found himself stuck in a foreign country, covering all expenses himself
— Risked losing his job due to prolonged absence
— Experienced significant stress along with his family

Conclusion: Be careful!
Such cases are not uncommon. Turkish law is very strict about the export of potentially valuable items — even if you bought them at a regular market.

Sometimes a simple souvenir, shell, mineral, or plant can become the subject of a criminal case.

Recommendations:
• Verify what you are buying
• Keep receipts and seller contact information
• Request a certificate from the seller
• If in doubt — it’s better not to buy

Take care of yourself and enjoy your vacation.
