Attention, tourists! A new scam in Turkey

A new scam targeting tourists has surfaced in Turkey, and anyone can fall victim to it. Recently, British tourist Josh Daly shared his unpleasant experience of encountering fraud in Antalya.

What happened? Josh had pre-booked a taxi from the airport to his hotel. During the ride, the driver offered him a free beer, assuring him there would be no additional charges. Josh agreed, unaware of the catch.

Upon arrival at the hotel, Josh gave the driver 200 liras as a tip. However, the driver then demanded 800 liras for the so-called free drinks. A confrontation ensued: Josh refused to pay, referring to their earlier agreement. The driver began to threaten him, saying he would take him back to the airport.

It was only after the hotel staff intervened that the driver agreed to take 200 liras and leave.

How to avoid falling into such traps?

  • Never accept “free” drinks or treats from taxi drivers.
  • If you feel threatened or pressured, return to your hotel and involve the staff to resolve the situation.
  • Stay vigilant and protect your money!
