Taxis in Turkey: How to Avoid Scams and Pitfalls

A Tourist's Guide: How to Use Taxis in Turkey

How to Avoid Scams from Turkish Taxi Drivers

Taxi drivers in Turkey sometimes use clever tricks to overcharge passengers. Here are the common scams to watch out for:

  • Long Route: Drivers might take unnecessary detours, claiming there’s traffic. Use Google Maps to monitor the route.
  • Currency Switching: If you hand over 150 lira and they show you 50, count the money aloud to ensure no mistake.
  • "No Change": Don’t leave the taxi until the driver provides the correct change.
  • "Broken" Meter: If the driver claims the meter is broken, insist that it’s turned on or find another taxi.
  • Unreset Meter: Before starting the trip, make sure the meter shows zero.
  • Price Per Person: The fare on the meter is for the entire ride, not per passenger.
  • Restaurant Taxis: Stick to official city taxis and avoid services from independent drivers.
  • Forced Tips: Only pay what’s shown on the meter. Tips are optional.

Tips for Taking Taxis in Turkey

To avoid unpleasant experiences, keep these tips in mind:

  • Taxis can be hailed directly on the street. Available taxis will stop to pick you up without any issue.
  • Standard taxis have 4 seats, but drivers often limit passengers to 3. If you’re more than that, opt for a minivan or book a transfer in advance.
  • In Turkey, it’s generally considered inappropriate for women to sit next to the driver.
  • Tourist areas tend to have a higher risk of scams. It’s better to use public transport first and then take a taxi.
  • Before your ride, take note of the taxi’s license number and the name of the taxi company.
  • Many taxis run on gas, which can take up part of the trunk. If you have a lot of luggage, choose a larger vehicle.
